Case Study
Warehouse Loft Contemporary Finish
A converted riverside warehouse loft in Battersea was given a contemporary decorative finish across its open-plan living space, two mezzanine bedrooms, and exposed structural steelwork. The industrial aesthetic demanded a different approach to traditional residential painting.
The Challenge
The double-height ceilings and exposed steel beams required specialist access equipment and experience with metalwork painting. The open-plan layout meant any overspray from the steel painting could affect finished surfaces below. Original brickwork needed to be sealed and painted without losing its textural character, and the polished concrete floor had to be comprehensively protected.
Our Approach
We erected a full scaffold platform at mezzanine level to provide safe access to the steel beams and ceiling. The steelwork was prepared using wire brushes and degreaser, then primed with a specialist metal primer before receiving two coats of satin-finish metal paint in a deep anthracite. Brick walls were sealed with a stabilising primer to prevent dust and efflorescence, then painted with a matt masonry paint that preserved the brick texture. Feature walls were spray-finished for an ultra-smooth contemporary feel. The concrete floor was covered with hardboard sheeting throughout the works.
The Result
The finished loft space strikes the perfect balance between raw industrial character and refined contemporary living. The anthracite steelwork contrasts beautifully with the pale-painted brick, and the spray-finished feature walls provide a gallery-like backdrop for the owner's modern art collection.
Products Used
“Most decorators would have struggled with the industrial elements of this space, but this team relished the challenge. The steelwork finish is superb, and the overall effect is exactly the modern industrial look I wanted.”
