Case Study

Arts & Crafts House Heritage Restoration

A rare Arts and Crafts house in Hampstead, dating from 1905, required a historically accurate exterior restoration and sympathetic interior redecoration. Extensive research into the original colour scheme informed every paint choice, bringing this exceptional property back to its intended glory.

The Challenge

The property featured distinctive Arts and Crafts detailing including carved timber bargeboards, leaded casement windows, and roughcast render panels between exposed timber framing. Each element required a different preparation and paint approach, and the conservation officer insisted on historically appropriate materials and colours throughout.

Our Approach

We commissioned paint analysis from a specialist heritage consultant, who scraped back layers to identify the original 1905 colour scheme. The exterior timberwork was carefully stripped using infrared paint removers to avoid damaging the carved detailing, then treated with a breathable microporous wood stain in the original dark green. Render panels were repaired using a traditional lime render before being finished with lime wash. Interior woodwork was restored using linseed oil-based paints to match the original specification.

The Result

The restored property is now a faithful representation of its original Arts and Crafts vision. The conservation officer described the finished work as exemplary, and the house has been featured in a heritage architecture publication as a case study in sensitive restoration.
