Project Safety
Agree the Safety Plan for the Actual Project
The property, products, access and people determine the controls required. Confirm the current evidence and responsibilities in writing before work starts.
Safety planning should be site-specific
A broad policy does not establish the controls for a particular property. Before appointment, identify the hazards created by the agreed work and confirm what evidence the owner, freeholder, managing agent or principal contractor needs to approve access.
Site risk assessment and method
The project documents should identify relevant hazards, who may be affected, the planned controls and who is responsible for them. Higher-risk tasks should have a method suited to the actual property and scope rather than generic website wording.
Products and hazardous substances
Paints, solvents, fillers and stripping products should be assessed using their current safety data. The plan should cover ventilation, storage, handling, suitable protective equipment and disposal for the products selected for the job.
Dust, existing coatings and containment
Preparation can release dust and material from previous coatings. Before sanding or stripping, the condition and age of the substrate should be assessed and the appropriate testing, extraction, containment and cleaning method agreed.
Work at height and access
Access equipment should be selected for the task and property. The written plan should identify any scaffold, tower, platform or ladder arrangements, inspection responsibilities, exclusion zones and permissions required.
Occupied-property protection
Where a home or workplace remains occupied, agree room sequencing, isolation of work areas, ventilation, safe storage, daily handover and how children, pets, residents and other trades will be kept away from hazards.
Waste and environmental controls
The scope should state who removes waste, how controlled material is classified and which evidence is retained. Product residue should be handled in line with the current instructions and applicable waste requirements.
Pre-start document checklist
- Project-specific risk assessment and method statement where required
- Current safety data and product information for specified systems
- Role-appropriate competence or access-equipment evidence where required
- Current insurance evidence tied to the contracting legal entity

- Emergency and incident contact arrangements for the project
