Compare the Written Evidence
A credible proposal should make the scope, specification, legal responsibility, current evidence, programme and aftercare terms easy to check.
Appointment checklist
Six checks that matter
Use the same checks for every contractor so marketing language does not substitute for a comparable project record.
Measured, itemised scope
Compare the surfaces, preparation, coats, protection, access and waste included in each proposal. A headline price is not comparable if the scope differs.
Product specification
The proposal should name the primer, coating or wallcovering system for each substrate, including sheen, colour reference and any sample approval.
Responsible legal entity
Check the legal entity issuing the quote and invoice. Insurance, credentials, contractual duties and payment details should all match that entity.
Current project evidence
Verify insurance, operative cards, memberships and approvals required for the actual property. Check source records and expiry dates rather than website badges.
Property constraints
Record listed-building, conservation, estate, lease, working-hour, access and occupancy requirements before programme and materials are agreed.
Written variations and aftercare
The accepted terms should explain how changes are priced, how handover is recorded and whether any project-specific workmanship undertaking applies.
