What the specification should establish
Substrate and existing coating
Identify whether the surface is plaster, timber, metal, masonry or another material, and record any existing coating that affects compatibility.
Room and exposure
Consider moisture, cleaning, sunlight, traffic and exterior weathering before choosing a finish or performance requirement.
Preparation and primer
Use the current manufacturer technical data to confirm preparation, primer, application conditions, coverage and recoat intervals.
Colour and sheen sample
Review a representative sample in the property. Screen colours are not a substitute for checking the chosen product in the actual light.
Written specification
The proposal should name the manufacturer, product, colour, sheen and intended substrate rather than relying on a general “premium paint” label.
Availability and substitutions
Confirm current supply before work starts and agree any substitution in writing so the specification does not change silently.
Why samples and technical sheets matter
Colour appearance changes with orientation, daylight, artificial lighting, adjacent materials and sheen. A sample should therefore be assessed in the room and on a representative surface before the full quantity is ordered.
Product names alone do not define a complete coating system. The agreed proposal should also record preparation, primer where required, number of coats or coverage basis, application constraints and the party responsible for supplying materials.
